NyamoFam Travel Diaries: Family, Friends, Food, and Wonderful Places

Accra, Ghana

November 3rd

Our journey continued as we landed at London Heathrow Airport early in the morning. For the first time in two months, we felt the crisp, cold air as we stepped off the plane and onto the bus to the terminal. I have to admit, it was surprisingly refreshing to feel cold again, it made me realise how much I’d missed it!

After a short layover, we boarded our flight to Accra. It was a smooth journey, and as we approached the city, the view of its sparkling lights from above was stunning. It felt like a warm welcome to Ghana.

Once we landed, we squeezed ourselves into a five-seater taxi (a snug fit for sure) and made our way to our Airbnb. The place was lovely, and we were greeted by Mr Perkins, the caretaker.

Since it was quite late, he kindly arranged for some pizza to be delivered since it was the only place open at that hour.

Exhausted but happy, we finally settled in, ready to start this next exciting chapter of our adventure

November 4th

We had no specific plans for the day other than to relax, especially after the long travel and jet lag. We slept in and eventually ordered a delicious lunch.

That evening, my grandfather Jakob (or how we call him: Neni) and his sister Doris arrived to join us for the first two weeks of our Ghana adventure.

November 5th

Mama, Neni, Doris, and Eunice (Mr Perkins’s wife) went to the fruit market, returning with an array of fresh and delicious fruits.

That evening, we went to Labadi Beach for dinner. Fittingly, we ate at “Doris Pub” since my grand-aunt Doris was with us!

November 6th

We met Alfred, our driver for the next two weeks, and had a packed tourism day in Accra

including Jamestown’s lighthouse,

visiting an underground slave holding room,

a fishing port,

the Kwame Nkrumah Museum & Memorial,

and other interesting things:

After a tasty lunch at “Country Kitchen“,

we met with Auntie Sarah and Mercy, Aunty Sarah’s niece. Aunty Sarah is a dear, longtime friend of Kofi’s family.

And then we wanted to explore the Dubois Center. Unfortunately, it was closed by the time we arrived, but we still managed to find some nice things to buy.
