On our way to Japekrom, we stopped at the Kente Weaving Centre in Bonwire just outside of Kumasi. It was fascinating because of all the intricate designs.

Later, we reached the Tumi Hostel in Kumasi, a woman-owned hostel known for its community projects, including a sewing school and educational initiatives.

We drove to Japekrom, my grandfather’s village. We visited his property, including his grave and a school built there, much to my father’s surprise. My father was very pleased to learn that his father’s property became a school.

That evening, we went to Uncle Kwabena’s comfortable house where we stayed for the duration of our time in the village. Thank you Uncle Kwabena and thank you Kwame and Denis for looking after us in the big house!

In the morning, we visited Uncle Bob, my grandfather’s best friend and dear family friend for a chat.

Then, we had a tasty lunch at Auntie Adwoa’s house, where we were warmly hosted and fed throughout our stay. She was so kind and generous with us and we hope to return the attention in Switzerland soon.

We hosted a family party to meet everyone and took a big group photo (not an easy feat!).

Later, we visited my great-grandmother’s grave and met one of her sisters in Basakrom.

We also explored my father’s cousin’s cocoa plantation, where we got to taste fresh cocoa – it was like nature’s lollipop!

November 11th
Before leaving Japekrom, we attended the morning assembly at the school built on my grandfather’s property and named after his mother Sarah Bonua. It was an impressive and emotional moment.
