NyamoFam Travel Diaries: Family, Friends, Food, and Wonderful Places

Okinawa

March 21st–22nd

After figuring out how we would get to our hotel and checking in, the first thing we did was walk around looking for some dinner.

The next day we took it easy, just relaxing and looking around a little, enjoying some tasty ramen.

March 23rd

As an attempt to redeem ourselves from not seeing whales in Sri Lanka, we went looking for some Humpback whales in Okinawa—and we were blessed with a spectacular show.

We couldn’t have asked for more!

After the boat ride, we stumbled upon a sushi train restaurant and acquired quite the collection of plates, haha

March 24th

We visited the “Makishi Public Market” and got to have some lunch there.

Then we walked along the Tsuboya Yachimun Street (aka Pottery road) on our way to Shurijo Castle.

Since the castle itself was being reconstructed due to it having burned down, we got to learn about the way it was built in the past and see the foundations and craftsmanship needed for such a building. Plus the surroundings of the castle were beautiful as well.

In the evening, I found a cute little omakase restaurant called “Edomae Sushi Matsunoya” and enjoyed some excellent sushi for such a good price—one of our top experiences.

March 25th

Before heading to Okinawa World, we went to a restaurant which had two excellent set menus—one with various grilled fish and another with pork and beef. It was one of the best restaurants we went to, for sure! And excellent value.

At Okinawa World, we saw beautiful cave formations.

March 26th

We travelled to Aka Island and explored the island a little. We walked to a beautiful beach and saw some furry friends on the way.

When we got back for dinner we got to enjoy an excellent six-course meal back at the “Kawai diving & fisherman’s guest house“!

A very pleasant surprise.

March 27th

Diving day! After a tasty breakfast we headed out to the boat.

We saw so many beautiful creatures and the water was so clear—excellent visibility—it felt like being in an aquarium.

Since I have no photos to prove it, you’ll have to take my word for it. It basically looked like the screenshots I added to give you a little idea.

Definitely the most beautiful diving we’ve had so far. And we didn’t even go on a day with ideal conditions.

In the evening, we feasted again and even saw some deer walking along the beach.

March 28th–April 1st

After another tasty breakfast, we made our way back to Naha, then headed off to Kume Island. It was only a 3-hour ferry ride, but due to the weather conditions, it felt much, much longer.

We spent the few days we had on the island pretty much just staying in and relaxing, as the weather never really got better.

April 1st–3rd

Back on Okinawa island, we stayed at a little house near Nago, and since I was sick, I didn’t do much. My family did drive around a bit, though, so they got to see more than I did.

April 4th

We had about a 1.5-hour drive back to Naha that was very beautiful.

Along the way we stopped for a very nice brunch at a cute café that served delicious Japanese-style pancakes!
