Our journey to the Pimenta Spice Garden was a long one—two hours of driving, followed by two flights, a night at the charming Thottungal homestay near the Kochi airport, and another two-hour drive before finally arriving at our home for the next few days – The Pimenta Spice Garden in Muvattupuzha.
Here, we immersed ourselves in the art of Kerala cuisine, which started with a delicious evening meal made by our host Jacob Mathews.

After sleeping in a little, we began our first cooking session by preparing a variety of chutneys and sauces for the evening’s meal. We were under the expert tutelage of Jacob, who has been teaching Kerala cuisine at his little paradise on earth for many decades.

Then, we spent the afternoon relaxing before putting the final touches on our Thali, a Kerala-style celebratory feast, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

We spent the morning exploring the area, visiting fascinating places like a chocolate factory,

a rubber processing plant,

and coconut oil and snack factories.

Unfortunately, Isa and I were feeling unwell again, so we couldn’t take part in much of the cooking that day, but we still got to enjoy a little of what the rest of the family had prepared for dinner.

Thank you Jacob for being such a kind and knowledgeable teacher!
